Club President – Alex Nicholls
The club is led and founded by Alex Nicholls, who has extensive business and management experience. Alex is a Managing Director by trade, having run his corporate business, for the past 10 years, employing over 50 staff at its peak - providing strong transferable skills and making him well-qualified to run a chess club.
In addition, Alex was a member of Worcester City Chess Club for three years, serving as both Club Treasurer and as a team captain - providing practical chess club experience and insight.
Supporting the President, Steve Nicholls, a retired accountant, who takes on the role of Club Treasurer. Steve spent 14 years at Worcester City Chess Club, bringing valuable expertise both on and off the chessboard. Steve combines financial expertise with deep knowledge of chess club operations, ensuring sound governance and smooth administration.

Club Secretary – Sarah Burgess
The role of Club Secretary is held by Sarah Burgess, who has a strong background in customer service and administration. While new to the sport of chess, her energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism will be invaluable to the club’s administration and culture.
Team Captain – Colin Vernon
Colin Vernon, a keen player with 20 years of club and congress experience, will lead the club’s Under 1650-rated section. His friendly, approachable style and love for the game will motivate emerging players and make him an influential presence within the club.
Colin holds the chess coaching qualifications: 'FIDE School Instructor' and 'FIDE Lead School Instructor' achieved in 2024.
The Chess Club exists to bring together individuals interested in learning, playing, and promoting the game of chess in an inclusive and respectful environment. This constitution establishes the club’s purpose, organisation, and governance.
