29/06/26 - WARNDON TASTE FIRST EVER DEFEAT 3½ - 1½

2 min read

Warndon Chess Club continued its pre-season programme on Monday evening with an ECF rated friendly match against an experienced Leominster side. Although the visitors ran out 3½–1½ winners, the match provided valuable preparation ahead of the new league season.

The highlight for Warndon came on Board 5, where new Hungarian member Tamas Molnar marked his club debut with an excellent victory. After gaining a slight edge in the middlegame, Tamas displayed impressive technique and superb clock management to convert a rook and bishop ending, earning a deserved first win for the club.

On Board 2, Alex Nicholls secured Warndon's only other half-point. A sequence of early exchanges led to a balanced ending with two rooks and a knight each by move 19, where the position offered few imbalances. With neither side wishing to overpress from an equal position, the players agreed a draw.

Board 1 featured the upset of the evening and also included an unusual incident involving the arbiter during the game. On Boards 3 and 4, Leominster's greater experience proved decisive, with the visitors demonstrating strong positional play and confident endgame technique to convert their advantages into full points.

While the result went Leominster's way, the evening achieved exactly what pre-season friendlies are designed for: competitive practice and valuable match experience.

Thank you to Leominster Chess Club for an enjoyable evening of chess. Please see the match card and photographs above and below.
