2 min read

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Worcestershire Chess Association (WCA) was held on Tuesday 16th June 2026 in the function room at the Longbridge Club. Attended by 21 WCA members from 8 of the Worcestershire chess clubs (Kidderminster, Redditch, Longbridge, Evesham, Pebworth, Malvern Worcester City and Warndon) making it a well-supported and productive evening for chess across the county.

Warndon Chess Club was proudly represented by Club President Alex Nicholls, Club Secretary Sarah Burgess, and club members Viktor Gorbunov and Tom Evans.

The AGM provided an important opportunity for clubs to review the past season and discuss the future direction of county chess. Among the key topics covered were proposed changes to league structures, competition formats, fixture administration, player development, and initiatives designed to encourage greater participation across all levels of the game.

One of the evelopments agreed at the meeting was the introduction of a new Under-1350 Rapid League. The competition aims to provide more opportunities for developing players to gain valuable competitive experience.

The meeting also included reports from county officers, discussions on finances and governance, and planning for the forthcoming season. These annual meetings play a vital role in ensuring that Worcestershire chess continues to thrive through collaboration between clubs and volunteers.

Warndon Chess Club was particularly pleased to see Club President Alex Nicholls appointed to two important county roles for the 2026/27 season.

Alex was elected as Worcestershire Competitions Secretary, a position responsible for the governance, organisation, and administration of the county's league and competition structure. The role is central to ensuring that competitions run smoothly and effectively throughout the season.

In addition, Alex was appointed Captain of the Worcestershire Under-1850 County Team. The team will compete in next season's inter-county championship against Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, and Herefordshire, with the aim of securing qualification for the national stages of the competition.

Everyone at Warndon Chess Club would like to congratulate Alex on both appointments and thank all those who attended and contributed to what was an engaging and successful AGM. We look forward to supporting Worcestershire chess and building on the positive developments discussed as preparations begin for the 2026/27 season.
