Club Chess Coach Achieves FIDE National Instructor Standard
Chess coach and Computing lecturer Colin Vernon has achieved the required standard for the FIDE National Instructor (NI) title, subject to formal approval by the FIDE Council due to take place next week.
Colin was previously qualified as a FIDE Lead School Instructor, but the FIDE National Instructor title is a higher level of proficiency.
The achievement follows Colin’s participation in a three-day FIDE Trainers’ Seminar, which included a two-hour exam and the assessment also considered areas including coaching experience, professional skills, playing strength and experience developing chess players.
The National Instructor title is an internationally recognised FIDE trainer title. It recognises coaches with the knowledge and experience to support the development of chess players, particularly at national, junior and developing-player level. Alongside his FIDE lead school and school instructor titles, Colin is also an ECF Registered Chess Coach Level 2 and is involved in junior chess development in Worcestershire, including coaching and supporting young players in competitive chess.
Colin said:
“I’m pleased to have achieved the required standard for the National Instructor title. Coaching is an important part of my involvement in chess, and I am always looking for ways to improve how I support developing players but also for myself.
“The seminar was a valuable experience and gave me new ideas that I can bring into my coaching. I am particularly looking forward to using what I’ve learned when working with junior players.”
The NI title is now expected to proceed through the formal FIDE approval process, with final confirmation subject to approval by the FIDE Council when they meet next week during the Chess Olympiad.
